Carry-on baggage on planes: What you can bring into the cabin

Planning a flight and unsure about what you can bring into the cabin? There are a wide variety of regulations regarding the size of suitcases and bags, as well as their contents and weight. At Harbour 2nd, we produce high-quality leather bags and backpacks, among other items, which our customers love to use as carry-on luggage. To help you prepare for your trip as best as possible and choose the perfect travel luggage, this article will show you what to keep in mind.

Hand luggage size – varies by airline

Let’s start directly with the most complicated question: How big can hand luggage be on a plane? The answer depends entirely on the carry-on baggage rules of the individual airlines. These determine the maximum size of your suitcase or bag.

In principle, you should always check the airline's website. There you will find all the important information you need for your planning. A common size for a piece of hand luggage is, for example, 55 × 40 × 20 cm. But be careful: some airlines deviate from this and specify smaller dimensions, or may even be more generous. In our shop, you will find numerous products that are perfect for taking into the aircraft cabin. Our travel bags or our handbags and leather backpacks are particularly popular.

Important: When measuring, don't forget the wheels and handles – these are included in the dimensions!

Weight can also be relevant

While some airlines only specify certain dimensions, some carriers also have weight restrictions. This is often around 6 to 8 kilograms. Here too, it is essential that you know the exact regulations to avoid additional fees.

The personal item

Many airlines allow a so-called personal item in addition to your carry-on bag. Depending on the airline, this could be a small backpack, a fanny pack, or a laptop bag. You will also find high-quality leather options for this in our range. Note that this item can also be defined differently depending on the airline's regulations and that specific size requirements may apply.

What happens if your hand luggage does not meet the requirements

If you have packed more than allowed or your luggage is too large, it can have unpleasant consequences. First of all, don't worry: you will definitely still be able to fly. However, you will usually have to pay a fee to check your luggage retrospectively. Your hand luggage will then be checked into the cargo hold and you will not be able to take it into the cabin.

If you have booked checked baggage and still have space in it, you have the option of moving the contents from one piece of luggage to the other. This only works, of course, if both pieces still comply with the regulations in the end.

Items you are allowed to take – and those you are not

There is a lot to consider when packing for a flight. To ensure everything goes smoothly at the security checkpoint, you should keep the following in mind:

What is allowed in hand luggage

Some items are no problem at all in your hand luggage or should even be kept there. These include:

  • Electronic devices such as laptops, cameras, tablets, and of course your smartphone.

  • You should pack your power bank in your hand luggage, as it is not allowed in checked baggage.

  • Documents and valuables like your passport, wallet, important papers, and credit cards obviously belong in your hand luggage.

  • You are also allowed to take clothing and personal items on board.

  • You can and should pack medication to have it at hand at all times. Check for any special requirements regarding medical certificates and restrictions on liquids.

  • Food is allowed with restrictions: Solid foods like bread, fruit, snacks, and packaged products are usually not a problem. Note that there may be import restrictions for certain foods. Also, avoid liquid or creamy food, as this counts as transporting liquids.

What is not allowed

The carry-on rules specify exactly what you are not allowed to bring on board. This includes the following items:

  • Knives and sharp objects like nail files and scissors. The latter may be allowed depending on the length of the blades.

  • Tools

  • Lighters (one lighter per passenger may be allowed, but it must be carried on your person)

  • Weapons, including replicas or toy weapons

  • Explosive and flammable substances

  • Larger sports equipment such as golf clubs

Special case: Liquids in hand luggage

Anyone who has flown before is familiar with this topic. Liquids are subject to special restrictions in hand luggage, but are not strictly forbidden. For security reasons, you can only take containers with liquid quantities of up to 100 ml. These must be carried in a transparent, resealable bag with a volume of 1 liter.

If you do not follow these rules, you will usually have to discard your liquids. By the way, sprays, makeup, toothpaste, or creams also count as liquids!

Tip: Take advantage of Duty-Free rules

Once you have passed the check-in counter and the security checkpoint, you can shop in the duty-free area before boarding the plane. The advantage: If you purchase liquids there that are over 100 ml, you are still allowed to take them on board. Perfect for picking up a drink or shampoo.

Frequently asked questions about hand luggage on planes

Do you still have questions? In our FAQ, you can find even more important information on the topic:

Can you fly with only hand luggage?

Yes, you do not have to take checked baggage with you. This is especially practical for short trips, as it often saves you extra fees. Hand luggage is often enough for shorter journeys. Just make sure not to exceed the maximum weight on your return flight if you have purchased souvenirs or other items at your destination!

Are there differences between Business and Economy Class?

Yes, usually passengers in Business Class are allowed more luggage on board. For example, different rules regarding weight, dimensions, or the number of pieces of luggage may apply. However, the same requirements at the security checkpoint apply to everyone.

Can I also wear certain items on my person?

You can, for example, wear several layers of clothing to save space in your hand luggage. This is generally allowed. It is advisable to wear heavy clothing for the flight to save weight.

Are hand luggage requirements universal?

No, the regulations vary by airline. This can become particularly relevant if you are flying with a different airline on a connecting flight or return trip. In any case, make sure that your piece of luggage complies with all the requirements of the various flights.

Is more hand luggage allowed on long-haul flights?

In fact, rules are often slightly more generous on longer flights. Sometimes carry-on luggage is already included in the price and does not need to be booked separately. In some cases, more weight or a larger volume is allowed. Again, this depends entirely on the airline and cannot be generalized!

Am I allowed to take snacks on the plane?

Generally, it is no problem to take certain foods on board. You can pack bread, nuts, chips, fruit, or sweets. Liquids and foods with a creamy texture, such as yogurt, pesto, and similar, are only allowed in 100 ml containers, which you must carry in a 1-liter bag. In case of doubt, the security staff will decide what you are allowed to take. It is recommended to avoid snacks with strong odors so as not to bother other passengers.
